All of that may be true today. But the introduction of ads changes the relationship between you and the product. And if you've been using ChatGPT to process your feelings, that shift is worth understanding.

People Are Already Using ChatGPT as a Journal

This isn't hypothetical. Millions of people talk to ChatGPT about the most private parts of their lives. They vent about their boss. They process a breakup. They work through anxiety at 2am when nobody else is awake.

Anthropic's own large-scale analysis of how people use frontier chatbots — published as the [Clio report](https://www.anthropic.com/research/clio) — found that personal wellbeing, emotional support, and self-reflection consistently rank among the most common real-world use categories for general-purpose LLMs. Independent academic work has documented the same pattern of people externalizing emotional content to chatbots, and has flagged the risk this carries when the underlying system is not designed for clinical safety ([Stanford HAI / Moore et al., 2025](https://arxiv.org/abs/2504.18412)).

Anecdotally, this shows up everywhere. Reddit threads describe people feeding years of journal entries into a chatbot and being startled by how accurately it surfaced patterns they had never named themselves. Whether that is healthy depends almost entirely on what happens to the data afterward.
