One available starting point is a seven-day journal review for repeated situations, then use a rolling 30-day view once enough entries exist. A longer seasonal or quarterly window is useful for slower changes, but it can hide a recent shift. The best pattern timeframe is the shortest window that contains enough dated examples to inspect. A pattern read should show its source dates and entry count rather than presenting a long window as automatically more reliable.

The shortest useful window depends on the repetition

A week can show that the same meeting, commute, or evening routine appeared several times. It is too short for events that happen once a month. A rolling 30-day view contains more variety and can show whether a repetition survived different weekends or workloads. A date range is not an evidence count

A pattern read based on four entries should say four entries, even if those entries span two months. Missing days are not negative evidence. They are simply days without a record. A rolling month tests whether a weekly signal persists

A 30-day window contains several versions of weekdays and weekends. It can show whether a repetition was confined to one difficult week or kept appearing under different conditions. It is also long enough for entry style to vary, which makes source links and record counts more important.

Calendar months are easier to name and archive, while rolling months are more responsive to the present. A person reviewing on September 18 may get more relevant context from the previous 30 days than from August alone. Neither view should be called complete when entries are sparse or clustered in one part of the window.

Long windows need context markers

A three-month view may span vacation, a deadline, an illness, or a change in living situation. Those contexts can explain why one part of the window looks unlike another. Without markers, a seasonal summary may average unlike periods into one bland statement. A simple dated note about the change keeps the difference visible.

Long windows also increase the chance that prompts, tags, or product behavior changed. A new check-in question can alter what gets recorded. The archive should not compare fields as though they were identical when the capture method shifted halfway through the period.
