A reverse-scored Big Five question is an item identified by an instrument’s official scoring instructions as running in the opposite scoring direction from forward-keyed items. The exact conversion depends on the questionnaire and its response scale, so the official key controls the calculation. Reverse does not mean an answer was wrong, dishonest, negative, or less valid. Preserve the raw response, apply only the documented instruction, and keep the resulting score beside the instrument name and context.

Reverse scoring changes direction, not meaning

Questionnaires can contain items that point in different scoring directions. The official scoring instructions identify how each response contributes to the instrument’s defined dimensions, which keeps interpretation tied to the questionnaire rather than to a reader’s guess about wording.

The word reverse describes arithmetic, not judgment. It does not mark an answer as bad, deceptive, or mistaken. A person can agree with either wording; the only scoring question is how that keyed response contributes to the defined scale.

Use the official key for the exact instrument

Apparent negative wording does not determine whether an item is reverse keyed; the official key does. The instrument materials define item membership, scoring direction, missing responses, and any domain or facet calculation.

The BFI-2 is a 60-item self-report inventory designed to measure five broad dimensions and 15 more-specific facets. Its official materials and permissions should travel with any implementation so the item wording and scoring procedure are not separated from one another.

Catch the mistakes that change scores

Another class of error happens after the arithmetic: presenting a relative score as an absolute truth, ignoring the comparison group, or displaying small differences with more precision than the instrument supports. Mechanical correctness does not remove interpretive limits.

Keep a calculated score in context

A correctly reversed item still reflects one self-report response. The final profile summarizes a set of answers; it does not expose a hidden self, establish a diagnosis, or predict conduct in every role and situation.

Use a result as a question starter. Choose one domain, recall a recent example, add a counterexample, and note the circumstance that made the responses feel more or less true. That record is more useful than attaching a permanent identity label.
